Client Overview
We were approached by the 442nd Separate Battalion of Unmanned Systems "MARS" - a combat unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine operating under the motto "Victory on our terms." The battalion needed its own official website - a 24/7 point of contact for future recruits, donors, media, and partners, with a clear structure, a design worthy of the unit, and the appropriate level of security. Turning down a request like this wasn't an option - we got to work immediately and did the entire project fully pro bono. That covers not only the development itself but all ongoing technical support: hosting, domain, updates, and monitoring. Our team is taking on all costs and work for as long as the battalion needs this site. The project started with a strategic session with the battalion's team, in which we defined the structure together, established priority sections, key user scenarios, and the required security level. One thing was agreed on from the start: security is configured to the maximum - for a military client this isn't optional, it's the baseline.
The Challenge
Deliver a fully functional official website for a combat unit in the tightest possible timeframe while ensuring a level of security and reliability that matches the specifics of a military client. The site had to go to production fast: the frontline is constantly shifting, communication resources at the unit are limited, and the site needs to operate as a reliable 24/7 entry point for recruiting, donations, and external communications.
Strategic Objectives
  • Strategic session and site architecture: Together with the battalion's team, we mapped priority needs and agreed on the structure, key sections, and user scenarios. We defined the main sections - About the Battalion, Our Values, Open Positions, Training, Social Benefits, Support the Battalion - and two key CTAs: join the battalion (Google Form) and support the fundraiser (Monobank).
  • Prototype and concept approval: Before design work started, we prepared and approved a block-by-block prototype of the future site with the battalion's team - locking down structure, hierarchy, and interaction logic at the low-risk stage.
  • UI/UX design in Figma: We built a block-based design in a dark color palette (black / deep red) that matches the visual identity of a combat unit. The typography uses the official Armed Forces of Ukraine typeface, UAF Sans. All photo and video assets were provided by the battalion's media team - preserving the authenticity of the visual language and eliminating any need for stock imagery.
  • Lightweight stack - pure HTML: We deliberately chose pure HTML/CSS/JS over any CMS. For a landing page of this scope, this means a minimal attack surface (no admin panel, no database, no server-side dependencies, no third-party plugins), maximum load speed, and complete independence from third-party updates.
  • Front-end and development: Responsive, semantic markup (desktop / mobile) with a minimal DOM and no heavy frameworks. We integrated the recruitment form (Google Forms) and the Monobank donation link in the Support the Battalion section.
  • Baseline on-page SEO before launch: Configured robots.txt, sitemap.xml, correct Title and Description tags, and full Open Graph markup - for high-quality link previews across social networks and messengers, where the site's URL circulates most actively.
  • Hosting on a hardened VPS + Cloudflare: The site is hosted on a reliable VPS. Cloudflare is deployed as the security edge layer: SSL/TLS with enforced HSTS, DDoS protection, custom WAF rules, rate limiting on key endpoints, geo-filtering of traffic from aggressor countries (ru / by), automated backups, and uptime monitoring. This is the minimum standard we consider mandatory for a site of this profile.
  • Ongoing post-launch support, pro bono: We took on not just the development but the full technical operation of the site on a permanent basis - hosting, domain, updates, monitoring, and content changes on request from the battalion's team. All pro bono, indefinitely.

Prototype: Site Structure Approved Before Design
A block-by-block structure of the future site, prepared and approved with the battalion's team before design work began. At this stage we locked down block hierarchy, the placement of the navigation menu with its key sections (About the Battalion, Our Values, Open Positions, Training, Social Benefits, Support the Battalion), the priority "Join Us" CTA wired to a Google Form, and the placement for the primary hero visual with the unit's branded symbolism. This approach removed every architectural question at the low-risk stage and let us move into design with logic that was already settled - no in-flight rework.
